About a year ago, our daughter E was diagnosed with Dyslexia. Over the past year, as parents, we’ve experienced a range of emotions and stages. We created Donuts Media & Learning as a place to share our experiences and hopefully some helpful knowledge along the way. As we navigate our journey, we have come up with some stages that we have experienced and some that we are hoping to reach. With E’s help and phonetic spelling we created the acronym “DONUTS” to identify and talk about these stages.
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding). Also called a reading disability, dyslexia is a result of individual differences in areas of the brain that process language.
Overwellming was one of our first emotions. It was a lot to take in and process. We dove in headfirst, gathering and learning as much as we could about dyslexia. We face different challenges daily but we are learning how to best serve E.
Over the past year we have gained as much Nalge (Knowledge) about Dyslexia as possible. We still have a lot to learn and know that this journey is just beginning.
We are working to hard to gain an understanding of how Dyslexia impacts E’s learning ability. We understand that learning disabilities affect everyone in different ways. We are working to the find the best strategies, therapies and interventions for E.
E continues to thrive in all aspects of her life. Although we face daily obstacles, she remains a happy girl both in and out of the classroom. Our hope is that she continues to thrive.
You can define Siksess (Success) in many different ways and it is highly individualized. E is still young and we are sure her vision of siksess will evolve overtime.
